Local Facilities
Nearby is an excellent spa, horse riding, wind surfing, sand yacht racing sailing boat hire and lessons, and a quad bike circuit (for all age groups) with a network of purpose built cycle routes through the coastal forest. There is an excellent, usually uncrowded, 18 hole coastal golf course at St Jean de Monts; one of five in the area, which also has a 9 hole pitch and putt course. About 30 minutes drive away near the town of Saint Gilles there is a great parkland course at Fontenelles.
Supermarkets: There are two large supermarkets located on the St Jean de Monts ring road at the roundabout for Challans. These are Inter Marche and SuperU. There are petrol stations attached.
Beaches: The nearest beach is approximately 10 minutes walk or a 5 minutes on cycle from the site through the dunes.
St Jean De Monts makes for a truly unique French holiday experience. White sand beaches and clear warm seas are the main attractions as well as a host of action packed beach and sports activities, water parks and local tourist interests.
The town of St Jean de Monts and the surrounding area offers a wide array of shops, bars, cafes, restaurants offering local and regional cuisine ranging from simple burger and chips to high end French restaurants, entertainment and even a casino of cafes. There are markets most days somewhere in the surrounding area. There are also several miles of clean and safe sandy beach at St Jean de Monts. The old town is well worth a leisurely visit, with its picturesque old buildings and character, whilst the newer and more exclusive parts of the resort area reflect the quality image of St Jean. In the season St Jean de Monts town centre becomes very lively and bustling, offering exciting night life.
Touring the Area by Car
You can explore the picturesque Loire valley, known as the Garden of France, and visit famous chateaux and vineyards, or spend a day at nearby St Nazaire or historic La Rochelle with its impressive historic fortified harbour. The beautiful island of Noirmoutier is accessible via a dramatic modern road bridge or, at low tide only, by a causeway across the sands. The Ile d'Yeu is a short boat ride away. Inland is the Marais Poitevin regional park, an unspoilt region of salt marshes and canals known as Venice Verte (green Venice).
This area is one of the finest in France for keen ornithologists, where one may see many birds of prey, some rarely seen in Britain. The Vendee region has a wide variety of cuisine; fresh seafood is a major part of the local economy and the choice is tantalisingly varied.
