Sussex is bounded by Hampshire to the west, Surrey to the north, Kent to the north-east and the English Channel to the south. It has three main sub-regions to explore – the coastal plain, chalk hills of the South Downs and the well-wooded Sussex Weald.
There is an abundance of things to do when visiting Sussex, with 150km of coastline and acres of countryside, so whether you are a thrill seeker, a nature lover, a shopaholic or just a foodie, you will find things to make your holiday worthwhile.
The whole of Sussex’s countryside is a pleasure to behold, with beautiful stately homes, historic castles and amazing, colourful gardens. Discover the vast sand dunes at Camber Sands to the UK’s longest bench in Littlehampton or visit the south east’s leading art galleries and theatres.
If it’s history you are interest in, then East Sussex has probably one of the most well-known and documented battles in English history – it’s not known as 1066 country for nothing! The Battle of Hastings was fought between the Norman-French army of William, the Duke of Normandy, and an English army under the Anglo-Saxon King Harold, beginning the Norman conquest of England. Following the death of King Harold on the battlefield, William the Conqueror assumed the throne of England and was crowned on Christmas Day 1066. He ruled until his death in 1087.
The battle took place approximately 7 miles north west of Hastings, close to the present-day town of Battle. The English Heritage ‘1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield’ is now a major tourist attraction and one not to be missed.
